First Lieutenant Cyrus Earle Graham, a Bryan native and Army Air Corps aviator, served in France during the Great War, only to perish in a plane crash on November 9, 1918—a mere two days before the Armistice was signed.

When local veterans gathered in 1919 to charter a chapter of the American Legion, they sought a namesake who embodied the “ultimate sacrifice.” They found it in Graham. After his remains were returned home and interred with full honors at Bryan City Cemetery, the community ensured his story wouldn’t fade into the archives of history.
